Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions regarding the Better Baby Sitter course.

Does my child have to attend all sessions of the Better Baby Sitters (BBS) course to receive a certificate?

We recommend your child attend all classes. Your child will not receive a certificate if they have missed either CPR or First Aid. A nurse or a trained Better Baby Sitter teacher must teach this information. Missed CPR or First Aid classes can be made up by attending the missed class at a different location. Permission must be obtained from the school/coordinator of the other location. Better Baby Sitter will assist you in finding a make-up class, although it is not always possible.

If your child has missed the first 2.5 hours of the class, you can call the Better Baby Sitter office and we can arrange to explain the information over the phone. You can then sit with your child and have a dialogue about the importance of understanding that being home alone and baby sitting is serious business, and takes maturity and problem solving skills to stay safe and take care of other children. If your child misses the diapering/feeding segment of the course, we will ask about prior diapering and feeding skills and decide whether experience alone is sufficient.

I really want my child to take the Better Baby Sitter course but what if my child will have minor conflicts with scheduling during the Better Baby Sitter course?

The Better Baby Sitters course yet loved by most students, is serious business. We teach children how to be safe when alone and while babysitting among other necessary life skills. We truly believe that when you sign your child up for our course, you will take it seriously too, and not over schedule your child’s time. However, we understand that things come up that are unforeseen, (volleyball, basketball tournaments, sick days), etc. and we will try to work with you. Please see *certification question above.

My motto as the Better Baby Sitters owner is “some information is better than no information” so have your child attend as many classes as possible for as long as possible. You will be happy you did, but we cannot guarantee they will receive a certificate.

I may be late picking my child up from class, or I may have to make other last minute arrangements to have my child picked up, what should I do?

Better Baby Sitters feels strongly about your child’s safety and well being.
The Better Baby Sitter’s policy about children being pick-up is as follows:

1) Each parent must pick up their child immediately after the class is over in the room where the class is being held. This includes everyone. (moms, dads, sitters, older siblings, or other parents of class members, even parents with infants in the car). If other pick up transportation arrangements are made, BBS must be made aware of it in writing. It is acceptable to bring a note the day of the class.

2) If you will be unexpectedly late, you may try calling the Better Baby Sitter office at 336-9993, and if someone is in the office to help you, we will try and reach the teacher of your child’s class, by cell phone. Every attempt will be made to contact the teacher. Since we may have many BBS classes going on in different schools each day, please specify which school your child attends. Please read on:

3) ) IT IS ALSO THE BBS POLICY THAT BBS TEACHERS STAY UNTIL ALL STUDENTS ARE PICKED UP. PLEASE BE PROMPT. BE AWARE THAT OUR TEACHERS HAVE OBLIGATIONS TO THEIR OWN FAMILIES AFTER CLASS, AND SOMETIMES WAITING FOR YOU, IS A REAL INCONVENIENCE. THEREFORE, REPEATED OFFENDERS WILL BE ASKED TO FIND A BETTER TIME TO ENROLL THEIR CHILD, A TIME THAT WILL BE BETTER SUITED TO YOUR SCHEDULE.

What if there is a snow day and school is cancelled?

If the school district has decided that it is too dangerous to open school on a snow day, then all after-school classes are also cancelled. Unless, specific arrangements have been made for our class to occur on a day that school is closed, the class is cancelled. Example: President’s Day: School is closed but prior arrangements had been made between the school, parents and teachers to hold a BBS class on President’s Day at school. If this scenario is true and it is also a day with inclement weather, your teacher will notify you by phone to tell you whether class will be held or not. If class is cancelled, it may take a few days to contact the school to get an alternative make-up day. Check the website for daily current updates.

How will we be notified the date of the make-up day?

BBS and its staff will make every attempt to notify you ASAP regarding the date of a make-up class. Daily updates and information are available on our website. A phone call by either the BBS office staff, instructor or school coordinator will be made to all parents as soon as an alternative date is established. We cannot guarantee that a child at home who takes down the information from our phone call will relay that information to you, the parents.

Can I get a replacement if my child loses his/her Better Baby Sitter manual or First Aid kit?

Yes. There will be a replacement fee however. Better Baby Sitters tuition includes a BBS manual and First Aid kit. Therefore, there is an extra charge to replace a lost manual or first aid kit. Manuals are $4 and First Aid kits are $7 plus shipping. Tax is included. Please call the BBS office at 336-9993 or email us at amy@betterbabysitters.com. If your child is currently enrolled in one of our courses, then there may not be a shipping charge. If not, we will need to ship the item to your home.

Why is there a shipping charge for the T-shirts and tote bags ordered during class?

(School Year): Since we only have a certain amount of T-shirts in our inventory, it may be necessary to place an order with the manufacturer. If your order is placed during the second class there is enough time to place an order and get the T-shirts. If the order is placed after the second class, there may not be enough time; therefore the item must be shipped to your home. There is a $4 shipping charge if the order is placed after the second class. The $4 needs to be sent in with your late order. **Some parents send in the extra $4 even if they order DURING the second-class time frame. A refund is not always possible. Our teachers do not carry extra cash. Our bookkeeper must then write a check. By the time BBS has to pay the bookkeeper to write a $4 check back to you, our expenses of expediting that process is not economical. Please read the directions on the order form carefully to avoid this problem!

You can call to order a T-Shirt at least 2 weeks prior to the class you have registered for.  This allows enough time for BBS to order your shirt from the manufacturer and deliver to the instructor for that class.

If I can't attend the BBS class, will I get a refund?

If you have paid for a BBS class and find that your child can't attend because of a conflict, a refund will be given minus a $10.00 administrative fee.

If for some reason BBS feels your child is not mature enough to handle the course information or is a behavior problem and you need to be called to pick up your child from class, NO REFUND will be given.
